Dry eye can have a major impact on your quality of life. You may find your eyes get tired faster or you have difficulty reading. Not to mention the discomfort of a burning sensation or blurry vision. Let’s take a look at dry eye treatments – from simple self-care to innovative prescriptions and therapies – to help you see clearly and comfortably.
Ocular Surface Disease (OSD), also known as Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), is the most common ocular disease. OSD is caused when the components of the tear film are not in balance which can cause annoying symptoms.
Advanced OSD may damage the front surface of the eye and impair your vision.
An Ocular surface exam is performed with specific diagnostic equipment to determine which areas of the tear film are in distress. Your doctor will formulate an initial treatment plan which will include any combination of the following:
Advancing Age
Female
Dry Environment
Smoking Exposure
Connective Tissue Disorder (e.g. Sjogren Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Conjunctival Scarring (e.g. From Prior Injury)
Vitamin A Deficiency
Prior Eye Surgery
Especially Corneal Refractive Surgery
Certain Medications (e.g. Anti-histamines, Beta-blockers)
Tears provide the lubrication for our eyes and help with the health of the eyes.
Oil layer – prevents evaporation of the water layer
Water layer – sustains the eye
Mucus layer – spreads tears to cover the entire surface of the eye
Meibomian glands secrete the oil that coats the ocular surface and tear film. Meibomian gland dysfunction occurs when the glands do not produce enough oil or the quality of the oil is poor. When the oil glands become blocked, it can lead to atrophy and even gland death.
